Küsin abi või suunan teise foorumisse.

Postitus Postitas smiechu » 04. 04. 2023. 21:50

Tere,

Tomasz

English ver:

Hi,
Asking for help or redirect to another forum.
I usually ride with bike panniers.
I was planning to do a bike tour around the Gulf of Finland and return to Tallinn from Helsinki .
The war revised the plans a bit so the tour will be along the south and north shore without going through Russia.
Please help:
1. where in Tallinn can I leave my car for about 2 or 3 weeks? I was thinking about airport parking (www.parkvia.com) but maybe you can recommend something cheaper?
2. does the ride (with a bike, without a car) on the Tallinn - Helsinki and Helsinki - Tallinn ferries require advance booking? I want to start from the south shore and Lahemaa rahvuspark but you never know how the route will work out. The most convenient thing would be not to make a reservation for a certain day just come to the port, buy a ferry ticket and cross the bay with the bikes. After all, a bike is not a car, it should fit.

Greetings and thanks in advance.
Tomasz

1. I park my cars on the street. I live just outside the paid parking area in Kitseküla. I could also park in the yard of my house, but I do this very rarely because it's not so convenient to open and close the gates. I feel that parking on the street is safe and secure and I leave the car to the street even if I'm away from home for a few weeks.
Info about parking in Tallinn can be found here: https://www.tallinn.ee/en/parking

2. Booking of ferry tickets in advance is probably not needed, but better to ask the ferry companies:

I would agree with the user mtm, that in general it is safe to leave a car on the street parking or other places where it is legally permitted. Try to choose a place which do not have problematic trees nearby or other suspicious objects which might fall to the car in case of bad weather.
Just some examples, where it is currently free to park, are somewhat close to harbour (for a cyclist) and in general a safe location (for a car with foreign plates). Obiviously, all kind of bad things can happen should you have a bad luck. Google Street View is a great tool to the homework, of course there is always possibility, that parking rules might change.

While there are suitable and legal street parking options in Tallinn it's also possible to find affordable parking. For example Europark has parking lots for 25€ per month like EP135.

Thank you very much for your help.
Such first-hand information is really helpful.
I looked online for paid parking lots but couldn't get to one that dride recommended - thanks.
mtm - thanks. You write that you keep your car on the streets of Kitsekül, Do you think it is also safe in Tallinn? Thanks for the info about ferries, I'll write there but I'm afraid they will write back that only reservation guarantees a place.
LauriA - I was thinking about leaving the car in a permitted place but I was just worried about those foreign license plates. Foreign plates and a long time to leave the car might be tempting. My car is not very expensive but in case of theft or damage to the vehicle far from home it would be a big hassle for me.
Thanks for the leads from the links. This parking lot at KUMU is really free? It looks cool, But won't a car standing there for 2 weeks arouse the interest of the police or the municipal police?

And one more request: please write how the translation into Estonian came out? Are there a lot of errors?
I think translating from Polish to Estonian is a big challenge for machines because they are difficult languages, though

If the street or parking area allows 24/7/365 parking, then 2 weeks wont cause any unwanted attention from the authorities. Only problem might be some kind of sudden maintenance for the area a la underground piping malfunction exactly on the place where you have your car parked.
If the car does not have any visible nice stuff which might interest junkies, then i would say, that it is pretty slim chance, that the car will be intentionally looted or damaged.
KUMU parking should be free unless there has been some changes.
Some more examples, where parking should be OK:

Main prison in Tallinn :-), should be safe, not sure about the parking rules - in theory due the ample parking space there should be no restrictions:

I guess that if it is relaxing for you to park your car in most locations in Poland - from Sopot to Zakopane, from Suwalki to Wambierzyce etc etc, then Tallinn is the same. Thanks to mobile phones, people are not jackpotting in the streets as often as they were between '90-2010.

Thank you all very much for your help.
Please say some more:

Are there any restrictions to carry bicycles by car in Estonia?
Is it possible to pack a bicycle into a car?
Are tow bar mounts allowed?

Thank you and see you on the trail

No restrictions to carry bicycles by car. If to use towbar mounts must register plate and rear lights be visible. If not then I don't think there will be a problem because it's rare to see the police on the road doing anything else than measuring the speed or checking for drunk drivers. In fact, it's rare to see the police on the road.
No restriction by law to pack bicycle to in to the passenger car. Despite that every cargo needs to be secured so that in the event of an accident, the cargo should not start moving.

Have you find secure for you place to leave the car for few weeks or did you need more suggestions?

And Estonian translation of DeepL was perfect.
